The Book of Belief project, as it had come to be known to the fans of the animated children’s film Rise of the Guardians, was a completely fan-run project. Headed by the Editor in Chief, the project served as a way for the fans to show their appreciation for a film that had touched their lives in a personal and meaningful way. Initially the book started with collecting fan works submitted by fans of the film worldwide from illustrations, photography of handmade costumes, paintings, and more to letters from fans ranging in age from their teens to 40s and 50s.
Once a large number of fan works had been collected, the editor accepted applications for the core team that would assist her in building the book itself. Overall there were 20 illustrators, 3 designers, and 4 editors. For several months, the illustrators worked with assigned designers in creating illustrations for the 6 main characters of the film, with 12 spreads to a character, while editors were responsible for the fan letters that had been submitted. When the illustrations were nearing completion, the designers stepped in and began piecing everything together assigning fan works to the supplied background illustrations and typesetting the fan letters.
Specifically, I was responsible for the Table of Contents, Foreword, Jack Frost, Pitch Black, and Donations sections. In total, the book spanned nearly 180 pages. 8 hardcover copies were printed and presented to members of the team who had worked on the Rise of the Guardians film. A PDF of the final book was made available, first to fans who donated to the project for printing costs, and then distributed for free.
